Seasonal Information - Winter

River Of Life Center In WinterThinking of winter, one recalls family gatherings, holiday parties, big bold foods, warm ciders, comfy socks, chilly weather, and for some the inevitable illness in the form of a cold or flu. It is best to prepare for the season  mentally and physically -it helps to do so by living according to nature, eating seasonal foods, and keeping life simple.

Food – During winter, it is necessary to provide our body with foods that are heartier because they warm the body and have the potential to strengthen our immune systems. Foods that have a cold natre and are raw should be kept to a minimum. It is good to eat moist and warm foods such as soups, stews,beans, roasted nuts, and seeds.

Exercise – It is natural to slow down during winter, however one should still do gentle exercises to keep the circulation flowing effectively -this will warm the core. keep the  immune system strong, keep the muscles stretched and the joints will remain lubricated.

Sleep – Wintertime is a good time to conserve your energy. This is the time you want to go to bed a little earlier and sleep a little longer. Let your body recharge. Snuggle up with your loved ones, a pet, or a warm pillow, and snooze!

Meditation – Give your mind some quiet time. If you experience less stress you will find that your sleep improves, which leads to a stronger immune system. Take five to ten minutes daily to sit in complete stillness while deeply breathing.

Self-reflection – The stillness of the winter season is a good time for self reflection. This will allow you to take a  good look inside your body and mind. It is traditional to make a New Year’s resolutions, this is a form of self reflection.

According to nature, our bodies are meant to slow down and conserve energy during the winter. This is a basic principle to embrace throughout your life. Keep in mind winter’s wisdom in order to stay healthy throughout the whole Year!
